Announcing the Newest Menstrual Health Country Snapshot: The Dominican Republic
Days for Girls International (DfG) is excited to announce the latest addition to the Menstrual Health Country Snapshot series: the Dominican Republic.
This Snapshot is the result of a years-long research and peer review process supported by a wide array of menstrual health (MH) stakeholders in the Dominican Republic, including DfG Social Enterprise leader Martha Rodriguez, and officials from the Ministry of Public Health of the Dominican Republic.
As the first Snapshot to focus on a Latin American country, this report aims to provide a high-level contextualization of the MH landscape in the Dominican Republic, from education to resource access to national policies.
And, the Snapshot is available in English and Spanish!
Below are three key insights from the Dominican Republic Snapshot:
- 91% of Dominican women and girls have experienced discrimination (such as teasing or social exclusion) due to menstruation.
- 20% of Dominican girls from rural areas miss 2-3 days of school because of a lack of access to menstrual products.
- In the Dominican Republic, menstrual hygiene products are subject to a 18% Value Added Tax (VAT).
These points from the Snapshot represent only a small portion of the analysis provided in the full report. Yet, they demonstrate the pressing nature of MH in the Dominican Republic and reveal areas where further action is required to improve the quality of life for those who menstruate.
