Our History

Read our origin story and discover how we’ve evolved since our founding in 2012.
Welcome to the story of Days for Girls Uganda, where since 2012 we have been working to shatter stigma and limitations associated with menstruation through tested life-changing menstrual health solutions. Days for Girls Uganda (DfGU) is affiliated to Days for Girls International (DfGI), a non-profit organization that has reached more than 3 million women and girls in 145 countries on 6 continents. Days for Girls Uganda was founded by Celeste Mergens, who is also a founder of Days for Girls International, and the late Diana Nampeera. Motivated by a desire to empower people to shape their destinies, our founders laid the groundwork for an organization with core values of Wisdom: honors those who we serve and with whom we serve, Gratitude: integrates into all areas of our operations, Collaboration: prioritizes responsiveness and flexibility Seeks to learn: through an entrepreneurial spirit of innovation and creativity.
In 2017, Uganda became one of the first African countries to pass standards for reusable sanitary pads. DfGU worked in collaboration with the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) and several stakeholders to make this standard possible. In 2022, Days for Girls Uganda started the journey with Uganda’s Ministry of Education and Sports (MOES) to draft the cost implementation action plan for the National Strategic Draft Plan for Menstrual Health and Hygiene (NSP). This will serve as the framework to guide all Menstrual Health work in Uganda.
Over the years, Days for Girls Uganda has touched the lives of 149,586 people. We’ve distributed menstrual products, skilled people on making emergency reusable pads, established social enterprises which are locally led and developed partnerships. The stories of resilience and success from the communities we serve drive us to do more every day.
As we reflect on our past, we also look to the future with optimism and determination. DfGU is committed to expanding its reach, innovating its programs, and empowering even more women and girls in communities in the years to come.
Join us in continuing this inspiring journey of empowerment. Together, we can achieve Menstrual Equity Everywhere Period.
