The Blue Zones

The Blue Zone is wide open. Hardworking volunteer DfG Chapters and Teams sew DfG Kits in a number of countries around the world that can be distributed in countries in the Blue Zone. These volunteer efforts strengthen connections and local leadership opportunities in Blue Zone countries, seeding markets and preparing the way for social entrepreneurs. If we do our work well, someday this Zone will be a Red Zone, too!

Local Leaders Driving Long Lasting Impact

It is sustainable development best practice to have education conducted by a local person because it can have an even greater impact.

  • Knowledge and information is usually best received, internalized and retained when it comes via a person’s native language directly.
  • Having a local person deliver education provides women and girls with a local role model; an inspiration for them.
  • Hiring a local trainer ensures DfG is not perpetuating the “savior/victim” dichotomy rooted in colonial history.
  • A local trainer can ensure quality and consistent training delivery, which impacts knowledge retention and success.
  • Local trainers have a deep understanding of the community and culture, and are best equipped to address the needs of women and girls in the areas they serve.
  • This vital, life-changing information is more accurately conveyed when it does not have to go through the process of translation. In addition, it takes twice as long to present the education through a translator than it does to have it given in the native language.
  • Hiring a local trainer supports local leadership and establishes a relationship with the Enterprise for times when more products are needed or health questions arise.
  • Hiring local trainers to teach health education elevates livelihoods and income generating opportunities.
